I used to collect baseball cards. It was a healthy hobby (not like D&D which is apparently the devil’s game). I had boxes, binders, sheets, and sleeves filled with the 3.25″x 2.25″ cardboard collectibles. I used Beckett’s Baseball Card Monthly to price out the value of my cards. I even went to baseball card shows to meet venders and other collectors to buy from and trade with.
And why not? Baseball cards make sense. There are real people who play a sport and build up stats. And there are cards that display both. What I don’t quite understand are why some people travel the world in search of banana stickers.
WTF is a banana sticker? Banana stickers are those little labels that are stuck on bananas to let you know the brand and origin of your yellow, potassium-rich treat. Oh. Wait, what?

Exactly. I’ve no idea what the allure is, but it’s a serious hobby for some. Really? Yes. Google it if you don’t believe me. Whoa! I know, right? Now I’ve nothing against collecting stickers. I used to collect stickers when I was 10. I’d even beg my mom to take me to the store so I could fill my Trapper Keeper with the latest scratch-and-sniffs. But I was 10. The people who collect banana stickers are adults.
How do you even know this? A friend of a friend of mine collects them. And while I haven’t the slightest clue why he collects them I’ve found myself feeding his addiction by collecting stickers for him when I travel. You are what is called an “enabler.” Perhaps I am. The fact of the matter is, I have no idea why he collects them (or why I help him). Perhaps it’s because they’re on bananas. Perhaps it’s because they’re cool. Perhaps it builds camaraderie among citizens of the world. Perhaps…aw heck, I haven’t a clue.
Anyway, if you know why people collect them, or if you collect them and can offer me a reason why you do so please please please let me know. Please.
BTW, if you want to get into collecting banana stickers be sure to carry a dollar bill with you. Why? Because normal paper destroys the stickers whereas a dollar bill does not. Why do you know this? I don’t know. SMH.
