What a remarkable year it’s been. From prepping for childbirth to keeping up with bebeJosito during his first year. To celebrate the experience my wife and I went with a YGG theme, ordered a cake, got a few supplies, made a playlist of sweet kid’s tunes, and sent out the invites.
What a great time. The kids had a blast. The adults sang and acted like kids. And today bebeJosito is officially one year old. Happy birthday little man!
If you’re thinking of planning your child’s first birthday celebration here are a few things you’re going to need.
1. Baby. We had ours a year ago which helped a lot and made finding a baby less of an issue (and a lot less awkward).

2. Family and friends. If you have a close knit group of friends, and a few family members they sure do come in handy when you have a party. Once you have people to invite send them an invitation and move on to item number 3.
3. Party supplies. We went with a Yo Gabba Gabba (YGG) theme. Regardless of its popularity there wasn’t a single store in my area that had YGG party supplies. Instead, I turned to Birthday Express for the party favors and YGG’s Nick Jr. website for Yo Gabba Gabba party activities. The whole shindig wasn’t 100% YGG. We hit up Hobby Lobby and Wal-Mart for the cheaper odds and ends.

4. Cake. If you ask around you can probably find a place to buy a YGG cake. We found someone through a friend and got a rockin’ (and delicious) cake.

5. Costume. OK, so this isn’t essential. But if you’re going to have a YGG-themed party you might as well look the part. I grabbed my DJ Lance costume from Amazon.com.

6. Music. What’s a party without music? Boring. For bebeJosito’s fiesta we created a playlist from his favorite tunes (the ones he bounces and “sings” to).
- Yo Gabba Gabba! Music is Awesome (iTunes)
- Yo Gabba Gabba! Music Is Awesome, Vol II (iTunes)
- Raffi in Concert (iTunes)
- Raffi, Bananaphone (iTunes)
- TMBG, Here Come the 123s (iTunes)
7. Activities. Turning again to YGG’s Nick Jr. site I downloaded and printed off song lyrics. One of the songs we sang along to wasn’t included so I had to do a little Photoshoppin’ to get it to match up with the others. From Hobby Lobby we picked up the old party favorite Pin the Tail on the Donkey and a few prizes. You wouldn’t believe how many kids will pin the tail on the donkey when you tell them there are prizes involved. Activities = good idea.

8. Good time. It’s your kid’s first birthday. Enjoy it. Have fun. As for my boy, happy birthday Jose. You’re 100% awesome!

A special thanks to all who attended and helped make Jose’s first birthday a memorable experience. For those who couldn’t make it, feel free to leave Jose a few kind words.
