Top 7: App-killing features built in to iOS 5

Top 7 App SniperWelcome back to my sometimes weekly post RE: 7 things I’m pondering, I’ve read, or that I just want to write about. It’s basically a place for me to write more sh** for you to read.

Yesterday was a huge day for the iDouche. At Apple’s WWDC 2011 keynote Steve Jobs & Co. announced, among other things, the new iOS 5. Chock full of features it will undoubtedly be a hit amongst fans.

On the flip side, it’s gonna be a major pain in the ace for app developers and jailbreakers because iOS 5 comes loaded with features that will render many bread-and-butter apps obsolete.

The Top 3 iOS To-Do Apps

post-it toDoI’ve been looking for a task manager for quite some time. At work I use Basecamp, a project management tool that uses milestones and to-do lists to keep things organized.  It’s a great program, but it’s overkill and way too expensive for what I’m looking to achieve.  Instead, I use Google Calendar for my events (milestones) and have been looking for something else to handle my to-dos (milestone subsets). Basically I need an iOS to-do app that I can access from anywhere, at anytime, and on any device.

The Web and the App Store are saturated with hundreds of to-do software, webware, and iDevice apps. I simply do not have the time or money to purchase every app and play around with them. So, I did not the next best thing. I read online reviews written by people who had the time and money, and whittled the field down to seven, then to three, and eventually down to one. Here’s what I came up with…

Pixelpipe HD iPhone App

UPDATE: As of 8/2011 Pixelpipe has removed apps from all app stores. Their Twitter account says they’re got something big planned, but it doesn’t look like mobile apps made the cut.

Pixelpipe app iconThe new iPhone 4 comes with a 5-megapixel still camera and HD (720P/30FPS) video recording capabilities. While this is a vast improvement over the 3GS, the recorded images are degredaded to a ridiculously poor quality unless you tether your iPhone 4 to a computer and transfer the files directly (or dl iOS 4.1). Enter Pixelpipe.

Initially released for the 3GS and later pulled from the iPhone App Store for providing “functionality outside the API”, Pixelpipe Inc. rebounded, fixed the problem, and is now updated to Pixelpipe HD (ver 2.1.1). Listen to me now and hear me next Thursday, if you don’t have this free app, you need to download it ASAP. Why? For starters, it is the easiest way to upload images and videos as they were captured right from your iPhone 4 (or Android). Not enough for you? Check out the rest…

World Cup 2010 iPhone Apps

WC2010 LogoFour years ago ESPN’s coverage sucked hard, and I had to resort to Univision for the majority of the games. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing because the GOLLLLLLL guy is on the channel. This year, however, I can follow the play-by-play as well as listen and watch all the games from the comfort of my iPhone and all for under $20.

That’s right, thanks to my iPhone and iPad I can keep up with all the action. I don’t need a bunch of apps. And, I don’t need to be in them all the time either. Download, install, configure, and blammo. Instant World Cup iAwesomeness.

Hotmail and the iPhone

iPhone and Windows Live HotmailMicrosoft Live Hotmail is the leading e-mail service with over 260 million users. Apple’s iPhone is the number one smartphone worldwide with over 42 million iPhone sales. It would make sense that the two would be perfectly compatible.

When the iPhone was released in 2007, Hotmail users could not configure the mail app to receive their e-mail, did not have a Hotmail app available to download, and were forced to use a substandard web app via iPhone’s Safari browser. WTF?

Today, Hotmail iDevice users can choose from a short list consisting of Exchange ActiveSync, POP3 access, a third-party app, and an updated web interface. So which is the best alternative? Have a look…
